A Year of Spuds Begins

Okay, so this will be an unusual tale, but someone's got to do it....or not?  At any rate, my aim is to find the best hash browns in Portland, over the next 52 weeks.  This will be of no benefit to anyone but me, but a review of the year will be beneficial to my memory stores and lawd knows they can use all the help that they can get.

The process and format will be as such:  sample hashbrown offerings in the greater Portland, Oregon area once a week for 52 weeks.  If we are traveling over one of the weeks (and I know that this will happen), I will do "make up" samplings and increase the number/week accordingly.  As to format, I will not assign a numerical value, but, rather, just provide my subjective experience within this format:  portion size, color, taste and miscellaneous impressions.  The final attribute: would I come back for these again or recommend them to a friend.  Banal at best but it's my blog, so bugger off if you are not a fried potato aficionado.

First sampling:

Date:  March 24th
Location:  Rose City Pub on Sandy Avenue
Weather:  a lovely spring day.  KT and I walked down midday, as I knew that they had breakfast until 2p.
Order:  I had the breakfast special:  Prime Rib, 2 eggs, HB and toast.

  • Portion size:  ample; about medium from my previous experiences
  • Color:  nicely browned and crispy.  Pale interior
  • Taste:  fair but on the bland side.  Meh, is the word that comes to mind
  • Recommend/return:  Nope.  I wouldn't shun them but won't order them again.
Bonus:  I could do an entire year reviewing Tater Tots (what all good hash browns aspire to be); if I were, the RC Pub would be a favorite contender for best Tot in town.  They are that good.  So, skip the HB and go full on TT.
